Hallock Hill - A Proposal

Hallock Hill - A Proposal

Artist: Hallock Hill
Album: A Proposal
Label: Self-released

I feel a little too close to this to give a full review, but I've listened a good deal to it over the last 3 months or so after receiving an early version of it in the post and have found it quietly affecting. It is a disparate collection of mainly solo guitar tracks (with some piano and field recordings in there as well) recorded at various times over the last few years, but despite this there is a unity of feeling and purpose. There is a contemplative feel to the pieces, at times akin to simply watching the play of light on a landscape; and they evoke something nostalgic in me: the pale frozen hours of too many staring dawns, the hanging humid air of lost summers... For comparisons you might think of Loren Connors or 1 Mile North, but in truth, you'd do as well to imagine the stillness of upstate afternoons, or the texture of skin inside a light fall of rain.
